Diane,
I can only speak from my Maori/Italian/French upbringing . . . No, you are not being selfish! A gift or offering is a thank you for letting us stay.
Regardless of whether they are family, it's courtesy to offer/give a little something towards the upkeep of the Caravan. General wear and tear for one thing. They have a young child and spillages can and do happen.
You have site fees to pay, insurance and maintainence of the Caravan and possibly your time cleaning up after they have left.
No need to beat yourself, thinking you are selfish over this. Easier said than done, I know.

I don't think you're selfish at all , just expecting people to have some manners and consideration. Though , I'm afraid people do expect something for nothing , especially when it's the family who have that something on offer. We at the moment are getting average of 3 eggs a day , and obviously we don't use them all , so take them to family and friends . I have to say , that over the weeks , only one person has offered to pay for those eggs (we refused - thank you Jane) , despite the fact that we are paying around £10 a week to keep the hens , and eggs cost around £1.20 per 1/2 dozen . Guess our eggs are costing around £10 per half dozen as that's about the number we have a week. I am not complaining about the cost of keeping the hens , at the end of the day , they are pets as well , but not one member of our family has offered to pay a penny for the eggs , but they have moaned on occasion , about not getting them. Go figure.

People these days don't always seem to be grateful for what they have - especially things that "seem" easy to obtain. Here ends my "thought for the day" .
